Suakin Childcare Centre
Working within a variety of historically significant buildings, this project was for the adaptation of a complex of buildings which were part of the larger complex of the Harbour Trust Mosman foreshore. All of the lean-to structures were demolished and the complex of 3 existing buildings were retained and linked by a series of timber decks and ramps.
One of the existing buildings was adapted to house the office and staff room, kitchen, laundry and store. An existing garage was renovated and linked to the main building, which houses the children, with a service spine containing the children’s toilets, and a day store that houses the outdoor play equipment. The existing bathrooms were partially re-used and renovated. The new decks are all covered and fenced and provide excellent outdoor play areas.
The client had specific needs and the centre is equipped to care for 46 children aged from 0 – 5 years old. The detailed childcare requirements included nappy-change area, cot rooms and interior storage units and libraries.
